My husband loves the animated finale of “The Three Caballeros” so much he says nothing else here matters, and rates this, ahem, unique Disney collection 5 stars. I, on the other hand, rate it 3. Sure, the surreal stuff is creative, but the live-action material is so lame! And besides, I want a story! The 4 stars above are our compromise. (Our teenage daughter, by the way, sides more with her father.)

So here’s my review, a mix of all of our opinions.

SALUDOS AMIGOS

“Saludos Amigos” is a 42-minute South American travelogue. Produced in 1942 with limited wartime resources, it uses live-action scenes to link together four cartoons.

The live-action segments show Walt Disney and a team of Disney artists as they travel to the continent and then gather information and sketch cartoon ideas. Poorly composed, badly faded and politically out of date, the footage has the look of an old home movie, as well as an obviously overdubbed soundtrack. My husband, however, geezer-in-training that he is, likes these scenes for their historical value, as they are filled with propeller-driven airliners, 1930s automobiles and lots of women in big, flowing dresses.

As for the cartoons, my whole family agrees that they are some of Disney’s best.

“Lake Titicaca” stars Donald Duck as a tourist, getting into trouble as he attempts to sail a boat, take photos, communicate with the locals and ride a llama across a suspension bridge.

“Pedro” tells the story of a cute “little boy plane” who dreams of carrying the mail between Chile and Argentina. A compelling story full of fun and drama, it holds up amazingly well, and looks like it could have been drawn yesterday.

The hilarious “El Gaucho Goofy,” is in the same vein as the 1950s Goofy “How-To” cartoons. As the narrator blindly describes how Goofy “deftly tosses” a lasso around a horse, “quickly converts” his saddle into a bed and “gracefully” dines on barbecue, the dippy dog botches every step. (If you buy this DVD, watch for these scene transitions. The lasso segment literally gets pushed off screen by the saddle scene, which itself ends by rolling up like a window shade. When the barbecue segment wipes off at an angle, Goofy nearly falls out of it!)

Finally, much like a tropical version of “Fantasia,” the terrific “Aquarela do Brasil” (”Watercolor of Brazil̶ ;) starts off as a painting of a vibrant rainforest that comes to life to music, in this case a great version of the samba standard “Tico Tico No Fubá.” Soon Donald appears, meets Brazilian playboy parrot José Carioca (a Disney version of a Brazilian folk character), and the duo shake their bonbons off into the nightlife of Rio. Much of Jose’s dialogue is in Portuguese.

THE THREE CABALLEROS

The most bizarre movie the Walt Disney company has ever produced, 1945’s “The Three Caballeros” is a collection of animated shorts, all tied together by a bare-bones plot of Donald Duck learning about Latin America. The cartoons progress from typically sweet Disney family fare to a truly psychedelic, adult-oriented swingin’-single travelogue that turns Donald into a libidinous wolf.

It begins as Donald Duck, sitting alone in a room, receives a big box filled with birthday presents “from his friends in Latin America.” First up are a few cartoons about some unusual animals of South America — “The Cold Blooded Penguin,” “A Visit With More Rare Birds” (rainforest birds) and “The Story of The Flying Gauchito” (a flying donkey). These three shorts take up the first 22 minutes of the film.

Next out of the box are two pop-up books about Brazil and Mexico. Each of these comes to life as its own peyote-paced animated featurette.

First, the cigar-chomping José Carioca pops out of the Brazil book and takes Donald on a 19-minute trip to the town of Baia (today’s Salvador). As a catchy rhythm builds, Carioca creates his own harmony by dividing into four identical versions of himself, male, then female.

Eventually the birds meet the Cookie Lady (a live-action singer who attracts men with her baked goods) and soon the whole thing turns into what perhaps can best be described as a samba-fueled cookie version of the Marilyn Monroe production number, “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend.”

Donald gets jealous and pursues the Cookie Lady through the village — which is, all along, a live-action stage set meant to be a huge pop-up-book page. For the finale, the Cookie Lady turns blue, two of her live-action suitors turn into fighting gamecocks and soon everyone and everything — including the buildings, the moon, the waves in the sea — dances into the night.

The book about Mexico brings forth Panchito, a six-gun-shooting cowboy rooster. He tosses sombreros to his new feathered friends, proclaims the trio “three gay caballeros” and takes Donald and José on a 30-minute flying-serape tour of his country.

On Acapulco Beach, Donald goes ga-ga for dozens of live-action bathing beauties (”Come to Papa! Come here, my little enchilada!̶ ;) and keeps losing his swimming suit. At night the duck can’t stay away from the clubs, where he dances with still more real-life señoritas.

The movie’s bizarre animation includes illogical color changes and an overdose of morphing gags. Donald himself assumes over a hundred shapes and color patterns, and once becomes a woman. Some scenes, however, are beautiful Mary Blair gems that would later inspire the films “Cinderella” and “Alice in Wonderland,” as well as the classic Disney attraction It’s a Small World.

Sound great? My husband sure thinks so, and though I love the Mary Blair art, all the surreal animation and dated live-action blending don’t exactly float my boat, and, well, I like my movies with a story! Still, some people have always found “The Three Caballeros” irresistibly entertaining, and it is certainly a must for any animation fan, as it shows the Disney animation team at its free-for-all zenith.

The two movies were produced as part of the U.S. government’s Good Neighbor Policy, an effort to promote pro-American feelings (and combat Nazi sympathies) in Latin America during World War II.

BONUS FEATURES

Extras on the DVD include two good Donald Duck cartoons. In 1937’s “Don Donald” (also on The Chronological Donald Vol. 1), a flirtatious Daisy Duck (here named “Donna̶ ;) gets trapped in the rumble seat of Donald’s car as it bounces through the Mexican desert. In 1944’s “Contrary Condor” (also on The Chronological Donald Vol. 2), Donald finds himself hatching out of a condor egg and dealing with an overprotective mother.

Also included is 1942’s “South Of The Border With Disney,” a 30-minute behind-the-scenes documentary. It shows Disney artists, including Mary Blair, in South America getting inspiration for the animated sequences in these films. It was also on the year-2000 DVD release of Saludos Amigos.

Overall, my family agrees that there is certainly a lot here for the money, but we’re split on how much of it will stand up to repeat viewing.

Wow, wow, and triple wow. It is not often that I get excited over animation anymore, but these 40+ year old films took my breath away. This DVD set contains “Saludos Amigos” (1943) and its follow-up, “The Three Caballeros” (1945). A team of Disney animators visited Latin America and collected a wealth of film, photos, sketches, paintings, mementoes, and ideas that reflected the culture they soaked up. In “Saludos Amigos,” there is plenty of 16mm footage documenting the trip, interspersed with 4 animated segments: “Lake Titicaca” starring Donald Duck. “Pedro,” an ADORABLE baby airplane, “El Gaucho Goofy” starring Goofy (and to answer the “burning” question, there is no cigarette visible here), and my VERY favorite, “Aquarela do Brasil” (Watercolor of Brazil”). This finale could easily have been used in “Fantasia.” It is a marvel of animation, color, and music. It is absolutely breathtaking. It is inspiring to see what this team was able to create together. Released two years later, “The Three Caballeros” stars Donald Duck, José Carioca (from Brazil), and Panchito Pistoles (from Mexico). Imagine Walt Disney, Salvador Dali, and Busby Berkeley mixed together, and this film would be the result. The mixing of live-action and animation is pure brilliance. The segment “Las Posadas” is particularly beautiful, and I would have to guess the visuals owe much to Mary Blair. The color in both films is glowing and lush, looking as if it were just filmed yesterday. Extras include 2 Donald Duck shorts, “Don Donald” (1937) & “Contrary Condor” (1944). “Don Donald” shows Donald in his early days, before the styling of Disney animation became just a tad too slick. Both cartoons are very enjoyable. Other extras include a short Walt Disney CBC Interview where Walt discusses the birth of the 2 Latin American films presented here, and “South of the Border,” which includes much of the 16mm film shot by the Disney team while in South America. Although the quality is not as glowing as what made its way into the feature, it is still extremely interesting to watch. The usual Disney sneak previews can be found on this disc as well.

HIGHLY recommended; beautiful animation, and a wonderful peak into the Latin American culture of the 40’s.

I would call this Mike Leigh’s masterpiece, only I’ve seen many films by this brilliant director since screening this unfairly overlooked gem, and I feel ANY of his movies could be categorized as a “masterpiece”.

The movie centers on a black woman named Hortense (the multi-talented Marianne Jean-Baptiste) who, knowing she is adopted, is in the process of trying to discover the identity of her birth mother. She finds her real mother, a lower-class white woman named Cynthia Purley (Brenda Blethyn). Cynthia, unaware that Hortense is trying to look her up, has a more immediate problem - a rebellious daughter, Roxanne (the unfairly ignored Claire Rushbrook), who has no respect for her because of Cynthia’s many affairs. Cynthia is also trying to reach out to her successful photographer-brother, Morris (perennial Leigh favorite Timothy Spall), but she can’t quite get close to him because of the influence of Morris’s seemingly cold wife, Monica (Phyllis Logan).

If anyone knows anything of Mike Leigh’s style of direction, you’ll know why this film is so amazing . . Leigh doesn’t simply write a screenplay and tell the actors what to do, he allows them to improvise and develop the characters themselves; the result is that these characters are more than just one-dimensional cardboard cutouts. ALL of these characters are unable to be categorized; they have characteristics that are UNIQUE and that make us care about them. Their complexity is illustrated not only in their actions and by what they say, but by what is NOT done or said in specific instances. ACTIONS of the characters are important (notice, for example, Hortense’s inability to react emotionally, even in the family setting, or her reluctance to touch anyone). Another interesting feature is the way Leigh juxtaposes scenes of Morris taking pictures in his photography shop with the events of the story; we even become enamored by the characters that are seen only briefly, for a second, behind Morris’s lens, posing for photographs. The cinematography also helps to add to the film’s realism; it has a camcorder effect, without being at all shaky or deficient in sound quality.

Finally, the ending: Some may find the ending overly sentimental; I found it remarkably real (and nowhere NEAR as sugary sweet as those found in Hollywood films). Let me only say that it succeeds in that the viewer isn’t given total resolution, yet he is given HOPE; these characters CAN work out their problems with each other, and it raises a question that I (as one who is no stranger to family feuding), find very convicting: why, in family situations, do people so often choose to alienate themselves and suffer alone (often even punishing their loved ones, as illustrated by Roxanne and Monica), instead of SHARING their pain and helping one another?

A great film . .worthy of much praise and able to withstand repeated viewings because of the depth of the story and the people involved. Here’s hoping Mike Leigh will retain his style of filmmaking for years to come.

This film is possibly the most emotionally powerful film I have ever seen. I have never cared more for a group of characters as I did for those in “Secrets and Lies.” Director/writer Mike Leigh is famous for giving his actors the outlines of their characters and having them improvise most of their lines. This technique succeeds brilliantly here - you feel as if you’re a part of these people’s lives. All the actors turn in wonderful performances - Brenda Blethyn as the long-suffering poor single English mother, Marianne Jean Baptiste as a young black girl in search of her natural parents, Claire Rushbrook as Blethyn’s rebellious daughter, and Phyllis Logan as Blethyn’s well-to-do yet frustrated sister in law. At the center of it all is a monumentally understated performance by Timothy Spall, who as Blethyn’s brother attempts to hold everyone’s lives together as they face the pain of their ordinary existence. A truly moving film that is one of the best ever.

I remember watching this movie when it first came out on VHS. As a kid, I thought it was a frightening movie, a possible scenario of World War III. After buying the DVD and watching it again, I must say that it still stirs emotions in me. This depiction of an attack on U.S. soil is possible, but improbable. To watch this movie and say that the events shown could NEVER happen is foolish and ignorant.

One previous reviewer asks what happened to NATO in the movie. Well, if the reviewer had paid attention, NATO had dissolved in the movie. Another IMPORTANT detail that some reviewers left out was the nuclear attack on most bases and federal headquarters. The communists did not just take all their planes and tanks and just march in. A nuclear “first-strike” was initiated to throw the U.S. completely off-balance. Powers Boothe, who plays a downed F-15 pilot, explains all of these events to the kids that are now acting as guerillas in the movie. As someone who served in the Air Force as a missle launch control officer, I got to see how strategies like the ones portrayed in this movie could work.

The whole story in this movie is about Russians and Cubans (along with Nicaraguans) invading the U.S. and how it affects the lives of some high school kids. These kids become “The Wolverines”. Named after their high school mascot, they become guerillas, slowly taking out small enemy installations and equipment. They do not single-handedly destroy all the commies as some other reviewers think that was depicted! There were other guerilla units, too.

The film portrays war in a somewhat negative light, but preserves patriotism and acknowledges the legitimacy of the Second Amendment. I highly recommend buying this DVD because of that! The only blemish that it has is the sound quality. I expected better sound with Dolby Digital and DVD quality.

I was walking around at the local dvd store yesterday looking for a nice movie to watch that same evening. My eye fell on Red Dawn, and I read what the back of the dvd said. I was tempted and it sounded like an interesting film, so I bought it and watched it.

Red Dawn follows the story of 8 teenagers that manage to escape an attack on their home town when world war III breaks out. They flee into the mountains and from there they attack the enemyforces with gurellia attacks. This leads to great, but also brutal action scenes, thrilling, but also disturbing situations and highly emotional scenes that show the human soul hurt and broke down.

As soon as the credits were rolling over the screen I was quiet and just gazed at the screen, thinking about what I had seen. The message had reached me loud and clear.

The casting of this film is well done. All of the actors act realistic and their emotion feels terribly real, which definitely helps you to feel for them. The cast contains famous stars that where all not that famous while starring in this film. It contains Patrick Swayze (Dirty Dancing, Road House, Ghost), Charlie Sheen (Platoon, Wall street), Lea Thompson (Back to the Future I, II and III) and Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing). The rest of the main cast is less famous (at least, to me), but still do one hell of a job bringing their characters to life that all feel like real personnes in stead of just a few movie characters.

The only thing that should have been different about this film is that you don’t really get to know the characters before the war stars. After only about four minutes the attack starts, so you don’t really know what kind of main characters you are dealing with. But when they are together and thinking what there can be done, you will see who is who and what kind of characters they are.

The film has a lot of action sequences and thrilling moments that will entertain action and war fans for sure. Also Drama fans are definitely on the right place with this movie cause it really touches you. Comedy fans will have to watch someplace else, cause there are only about two little jokes in the entire film, for the rest the film is shocking, realistic, even disturbing at some points and is definitely not for the faint of heart. It really shows what happens to people during war, how their feelings change, how their entire personality changes. The message is therefor loud and clear: war is terrible, changes people terribly and gives nothing more than destruction, pain and a lot of suffering.

The film has a true eighties look and helps to give the story a kind of gritty look. It is a well shot picture and although some of the camerapositions don’t capture some expressions that well, it shows you what has to be shown. The sets are mostly outdoor and there are beautiful landscapes that help bring the story to life. It does not feel like being filmed in a backyard. The music is nice but isn’t that present in all the scenes which is a pitty some times.

The film is still echoing in my mind. It sure left an impression on me and the film is an emotional journey that left me actually caring for the characters.

A film that I will remember for a long time to come.

How will it go with you? There is only one way to find out: watch this film and the message will be presented loud and clear to you.

Mario Bava, the founding father of Italian horror (see my BLACK SUNDAY/THE MASK OF SATAN review), was a real trendsetter with his innovative camera tricks (he was a cameraman as well) and cinematic mastery. Every one of his movies changed the face of horror worldwide. But BLOOD AND BLACK LACE may just well be the most influential and ground-breaking movie in his distinguished career!
A fashion house in Italy becomes a slaughterhouse when the diary of one of the models is discovered. It seems that there is some unsavory material within the diary concerning the models. Everyone is after the diary, and in fact somebody even goes as far as to bump off a few people for the diary. Who will survive?
See folks, this is where the Italian giallo, the career of Dario Argento (my favorite Italian horror director), and the slasher film began. When I saw BLOOD AND BLACK LACE, I gained a new understanding of Italian horror and how cool it is. It’s all right here: wild camera moves (achieved on a red wagon!), lighting in different colors (echoing EC Comics long before George Romero gave it a shot in CREEPSHOW and even before the first TALES FROM THE CRYPT movie in 1972), gorgeous but ill-fated women, psychosexually motivated mayhem, and of course truly awesome murder sequences! Yes indeed, we can all thank Mario Bava for the state of Italian horror in its heyday and for all those slasher movies that have come out recently because Mario Bava singlehandedly shaped the state of modern, non-Gothic/supernatural horror in just 90 minutes of murder and mayhem!
VCI’s DVD is a testament to this movie’s significance in horror history. The audio commentary by Bava expert Tim Lucas provides a treasure trove of trivia for Bava buffs and Italian horror fans alike! Best of all, the presentation is uncut and in widescreen, complete with the original opening title sequence (which was truly awesome and evocative) and restored murder sequences which are as cringe-worthy as anything Tom Savini could come up with! We have the American title sequence (courtesy of Filmation Studios, the animators of Fat Albert and He-Man) and French title sequence, and much, much more! A truly ground-breaking horror film, BLOOD AND BLACK LACE is a definite must-watch!

1 star is for the DVD, 5 stars for the movie. I don’t need to say anything about the film; those familiar with Bava’s work know this is among his masterpieces. I’m writing this review to clear up some things about this new “Unslashed” edition. On the positive side, this version is Anamorphic widescreen and it does present noticeably more picture information on the right and left sides of the frame (the old VCI version was leterboxed a 1.66:1, where as this one is 16 x 9). Now the bad news. The color and contrast have been boosted/altered to the point that the image appears blurrier, grainier and more damaged than the previous version. Also, the interior sets (especially in the fashion house) have a putrid yellow/green hue to them not present in the old version. The soundtrack is horribly remixed, making the dialogue sound like it was recorded in a tin can and it pops quite a bit through the opening of the film. The French and Italian audio channels are reversed. None of these audio problems are present on the old version by the way. To top it off, the dvd menus are gaudy and offputting, trying to make this seem like a bloody slasher pic. In summution, the extra picture information just doesn’t outweigh all of the drawbacks of this edition. My advice is to hold on to your old release until something better comes along. Thanks for reading. -JWH-

Say what you want about producer/director William Castle (The Tingler, 13 Ghosts, Mr. Sardonicus) but one thing was for sure…he knew how to fill seats in a movie theater, primarily by forcing some sort of direct interaction between the audience and the film (at least in his horror themed features). In House on Haunted Hill (1959), he utilized a technique he called `Emergo’, which essentially featured a skeleton, suspended from wires, coming from the screen towards the audience during a specific part of the movie, the intent being to scare the pants off those in the theater. From what I’ve heard, it didn’t sound like many were frightened, but it didn’t really matter as Castle was a master at selling the sizzle, rather than the steak, as they say, and audiences flocked to his films…produced and directed by William Castle, the film features the merchant of menace himself Vincent Price (The Fly, The Tingler, House of Usher) in the first of two films he made with Castle. Also appearing is Elisha Cook Jr. (Shane, The Haunted Palace), Carolyn Craig (Giant), Richard Long (Ma and Pa Kettle), Carol `homina homina’ Ohmart (Spider Baby), Alan Marshal (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), and Julie Mitchum (Edge of Hell), sister of actor Robert Mitchum.

Price plays Frederick Loren, an eccentric millionaire who, along with his wife Annabelle (Ohmart), has thrown together an interesting little party involving five, seemingly random strangers gathering at a haunted house with ten thousand dollars to each who dare stay through the night. In attendance, along with Frederick and his wife, is Watson Pritchard (Cook), whose brother, one of the previous owners, was murdered within the house, Lance Schroeder (Long), a test pilot, Dr. David Trent (Marshal), a psychiatrist, Nora Manning (Craig), a typist, and Ruth Bridgers (Mitchum), a newspaper columnist. Seems all have agreed to play Frederick’s little game for one reason, they need the dough, and if some crazy rich dude is willing to part with his green for such a seemingly easy task, what the hay, right? Well, the guests arrive, introductions are made, and Frederick gives them the full lowdown. The secluded house is like a fortress (steel doors and bars on the windows) in that once they’re locked in (at midnight, to be precise), there’s no getting out until the caretakers arrive the next morning. Also, there’s no electricity or telephones, and the nearest neighbors are well beyond yelling distance. After a tour of the house, highlighting where various grisly events occurred (including a visit to the acid vat in the cellar…man, this place has everything), a few drinks, and some scares (the ghosts seem to have a thing for Nora), Fredrick passes out some party favors in the form of loaded handguns (nothing like being drunk and armed), not that they’d do anyone much good if there are ghosts out and about…anyway, midnight is coming so if anyone wants to cut out of this ghoulish get together, they’d better get while the getting’s good…

While not my favorite Castle feature (that goes to The Tingler), House on Haunted Hill is still a hoot and a half for all of its campy, good-natured fun. The one thing this film has going for it, above and beyond everything else, is Vincent Price. No matter how rotten the feature was (which wasn’t the case here), Price always brought with him a real sense of class and sophistication to the proceedings, especially true of the number of Poe based films he and Roger Corman made throughout the 1960s for American International Pictures. The absolute best parts of this movie for me occur early on as Price’s character is interacting with his wife, and we see the pair have an interesting hate/hate relationship…here’s an example of their often snide and insinuating banter they engage in behind closed doors…

Buy,Download, Or Stream House on Haunted Hill! Click Here

Fredrick: Of all my wives you’re least agreeable…

Annabelle: But still alive.

Here’s another bit…

Frederick: Do you remember the fun we had when you poisoned me?

Annabelle: Something you ate, the doctor said.

Frederick: Yes, arsenic on the rocks…

There are a few more excellent exchanges between Price and Ohmart, worthy alone of seeing this film. As for the rest of the performers, I had no real complaints. Elisha Cook Jr.’s character did get on my nerves after awhile, with his constant dour outlook punctuated by his persistent `doom and gloom’ predictions. Drink some more booze, you rummy…seriously, all this guy did was talk about how the ghosts were going to come and take them all away. Perhaps this attitude was assisted by his excessive alcohol intake, but really, what’s the point of accepting an invitation to spend a night at a house you believe you won’t come out of alive? The money? Won’t do you much good if’n you’re dead, fool. If I was in that house I probably would have shot him just to be rid of him. At least I learned one thing…never invite Elisha Cook Jr. to your party and ply him with lots of booze as he’ll turn into a real poison pill. I did like Ms. Ohmart, and not just because she was a smoking babe with a large rack, but because she held her own with Price, even if it was for just a handful of scenes. If you’ve got a hankering to see more of her, and you like ookie horror features, you should really check out another film she appeared in called Spider Baby (1968), featuring Lon Chaney Jr. There are a few, minor scares scattered throughout the film (a crusty crone, a disembodied head or two), but nothing that will make you soil yourself…some scenes will make you snicker, though, like the one where Pritchard chucks a dead rat into the acid vat, if only to demonstrate the acid is really acid. After some bubbling effects, a fully articulated rat skeleton bobs to the surface, indicating to those watching it truly is the real deal. Yes sir, that be some powerful acid…the movie may not be much for scares, but it does have plenty of atmosphere created by Castle’s direction, groovy, cobweb laden set pieces, spooky music, and usage of the Ennis Brown House in Los Angeles, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, for the exterior shots.

It seems this film has fallen into the public domain (i.e. the copyright expired), as I see there are a number of DVD releases by various companies. I can’t speak for those other releases, but the one I own, put out by Warner Brothers (it has a large headshot of Price in the lower right hand corner and Ohmart in a nightgown being menaced by a disfigured hand in the upper left), looks exceptionally good, and features both the fullscreen and widescreen formats, along with a excellent Dolby Digital mono audio track. The only extras included are a theatrical trailer for the film and subtitles in both English and French.

Cookieman108

By the way, this movie saw a remake of the same titled, released in 1999, oozing with high tech special effects. It was decent enough, but I still liked the original better.

William Castle at his gimmicky best! A Classic, spooky Black and White, with deliciously devilish Vincent Price as millionaire with a bored gold-digger wife. She wants a Halloween party with her friends, Price tosses a party all right, but not with the people of her choosing. He offers $10,000 dollars to five stranger if they will join him and his wife in spending Halloween night in a truly haunted house. One of the 5 is a young Elisha Cooke, family of the former owners who died in the house, and he leads them on a murder tour. To jazz things up, Price passes out “party favors” - guns. And it’s a race to find out whether Price of his wife will be the last one standing. This movie is a grandfather of nearly every clichés, blooding dripping from the ceiling, dark mysterious corridors, a witchy woman floating around and vanishing - and the topper that organ music!! This is more like a Halloween Fun house ride than a movie! Price is campy and has great fun with the role, with super lines, especially when fussing with his less than happy wife.

Castle originally devised this movie with “special touches” for the audiences, like ghost on wires gloating through the audience of people in costume sitting down beside you to enhance the fun house feel.

Just plain fun and a wee trip down memory lane.

Just wanted to leave a helpful review for those that are trying to decide whether they should buy the new 15th edition if they already own the 10th. Well, the transfer is much much better than the abysmal one that was put on the 10th. The 10th anniversary edition transfer was a very dull one at best, a step down from the bare bones dvd that was first released by Live when they were still around. The blacks in the Dogs’ suits were more dark grey and the overall look was faded. I was never sure if this was a creative choice or that it was simply screwed up. There was plenty of online debate when the disc came out as to the worth of it. This new transfer remedies all of that, the picture is anamorphic, with rich colors, making the film look exactly like what I saw when I used to watch it in the 90s. The 10th also, for some inexplicable reason, dropped a line of Mr. White’s dialogue (”I think he’s just passed out̶ ;) but it is thankfully restored here. So if you want the most solid transfer of Reservoir Dogs ever on DVD, this is your buy.

The extras, unfortunately, pale in comparison to the 10th, and this is why you’ll probably want to keep the 10th around if you’re a filmmaking fan. The 10th edition has a documentary interviewing most of the key players in the film as well as some priceless footage from Tarantino’s filmmaking lab workshops at Sundance where he (poorly) played Mr. White(!) These are all missing on the new 15th disc, but the new 15th disc carries over “Reservoir Dolls,” the torture scene played out by Reservoir Dogs action figures. The 15th also has retrospective commentaries by some of the cast and crew, 2 movie critics, and a film historian all on separate tracks while watching the movie. Rather interesting too. There are a couple of retrospective documentaries discussing the film’s impact on the cinema world. There are also deleted scenes carried over from the 10th, but other than that, mostly fodder to get you excited about Reservoir Dogs, including a short featurette about the new video game.

So, I suppose I would recommend this double dip if you’re a hard-core fan of the film, especially with the superior transfer. You can get it at Circuit City for $12.99 this week which is an excellent price for what you get, but I would hold on to the 10th edition for the filmmaking extras which were not carried over. Oh, and if you’re into packaging, this is the best packaging I’ve ever seen. An aluminum gasoline can where the top comes off and the discs are inside in a large matchbook (I believe the matchbook is limited edition). Sick and brilliant.

Acting that will blow you away and characters that disgust you even though you’re drawn to liking what little likeable part of them remains.

Depraved criminals that are racist, sadistic and keenly intelligent are somehow very human and compassionate on one hand and disturbingly evil on the other.

This movie is not for those with weak stomachs. Although the psychological element of fear is much stronger than anything you actually see in this film, there are a couple of gory scenes that will scar your memory forever once you see them… the type of deliberate, up close & personal cruelty to another human being that surpasses the desensitizing we’ve been through by watching other violent scenes on tv and movies. The isolation of the movie taking place almost entirely in one room makes even the most tame scenes un-nerving and uncomfortably intense.

Tim Roth’s performance is definitely the most piercing. Michael Madsen, Harvey Keitel, Chris Penn and the rest of the ensemble cast are also riveting.

You will never listen to the song “Stuck in the Middle With You” by Stealers Wheel the same way again. A song I once really liked still gives me the willies each time I hear it.

Season 2 of The Donna Reed Show is here, and the wait was wonderfully short! There are 38 new episodes of the Stone Family’s life to enjoy. Mary Stone is now 15 and brother Jeff is now 12 years old. Mary at 15, starts to date, as the high school boys and even young college men take notice of the beautiful young woman she is becoming. There are great guest stars on these episodes as well. The beautiful Esther Williams plays Donna’s school friend Molly. And a young Marion Ross, the Happy Days mom plays Jeff’s new teacher. This second season is just as wonderful as the first, as you follow life in the Stone household through the end of 1959 and halfway into 1960. Hopefully, the next six seasons will follow just as quickly as this one did, as each season just keeps getting more wonderful than the one before with such great stories and guest stars!

First of all, it’s good to see this series finally make it to DVD by someone because Sony doesn’t do much with classic television and they have a ton of it with the old Columbia and Ziv United Artists shows etc.(Rescue 8, Dennis the Menace, Highway Patrol, Sea Hunt etc.) unless it’s in color and has always been around, but this show should have been fully remastered with the original titles in tact. The same main title is on every episode and the end credits cut short before the Screen Gems logo and what true collector want’s to buy a show in that condition. Yes, it’s cost’s money to do a full remaster, but it’s the only way to preserve these shows for generations to come. Before the masters go bad and then you have nothing. Everyone looks too much at the bottom line anymore and not enough at true quality and continuaty. At least 80 percent of the people who buy these shows are collectors and they want to see these shows as they originally aired. commercials, next week previews, logo’s etc. CBS/Paramount is doing a better job in accomplishing this of late, and I hope they continue. The other guys are doing quite poorly. I respect the fact that other reviewers are appreciative that the show is out and have expressed that in there reviews but if you don’t express your true feelings, the studio’s will figure everything is just fine and continue down the same path. Is that what you wan’t? I doubt it! Let them know!

It seems like the only way anyone hears about this movie, its either from fanatic word of mouth or from seeing it sitting in Blockbusters. Thats a shame, because this first outing by director Troy Duffy is an extremely cool film that deserves all the attention it can get.

Sean Patrick Flannery and Norman Reedus play two good ole Irish Catholic boys in Boston, who one day get sick of the corruption in the city and begin a bloody crusade to wipe it out. Willem DaFoe plays the FBI agent hot on their trail, who is torn between bringing the mysterious vigilantes to justice, or joining their crusade.

The film is, simply put, cool. Its one of the only movies that actually make going to church look cool. Don’t be fooled by the description, however; this is not an action movie. Do not expect blazing gun battles with crazy angles and MTV like editing. This is a film about morality, doing what one thinks is right, and having codes of honour. It’s about all those things, and how close they may sometimes get to walking the edge between good and evil.

The two actors who play the Irish vigilantes are great in their roles, playing the boys not as superheroes, but as regular joes with a huge chip on their shoulder. A nice twist in the film is DaFoe’s portrayel of the FBI agent, who also happens to be gay. He plays him as a great character without being tempted to dip into stereotypes. Great job by the versatile actor.

This is definately a movie not to be missed. If you are fortunate to see this in your video store, take it out and enjoy.

It only takes a few minutes to draw a comparison between Troy Duffy’s “The Boondock Saints” and almost any Quentin Tarentino film. As I watched this breathtaking movie, I snickered to myself over realizing this little fact. I figured few others would make the connection. Boy, was I wrong! It seems that anyone who has seen “Boondock Saints” immediately thinks of “Pulp Fiction” or “Reservoir Dogs.” Moreover, a lot of people do not like the idea of Duffy ripping off such a noble American icon. Perhaps they have forgotten that Tarentino has based his entire career on borrowing or outright ripping off ideas from 1960s and 1970s cinema. I could care less whether Duffy imitated “Pulp Fiction” or whether he arrived at this idea on his own. Hollywood routinely begs, borrows, and steals in an effort to make a buck. The recent trend of remaking older films is only one aspect of this philosophy, so complaining about some filmmaker copying a specific style is a moot point. “The Boondock Saints” is an enormously entertaining way to spend a couple of hours and, despite a few flaws, may attain a cult status rivaling anything made by Quentin Tarentino. This is how it should be.

Connor and Murphy MacManus (Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus respectively) are two Irish brothers who spend their days drinking at the local pub and working in a local meatpacking plant. They don’t do much with their free time outside of lounging around their filthy loft and hanging around with unbalanced people like their friend David Rocco, a minor criminal who longs to join the local branch of the mafia. Trouble rears its ugly head when some Russian gangsters move into the neighborhood and threaten to close down the neighborhood bar. After a fistfight leads to a couple of killings in an alley, the boys realize they may be in a spot of trouble with local law enforcement. Actually, they are in more trouble than they realize at first when an FBI agent by the name of Paul Smecker arrives on the scene. The inept local cops stand around throwing out all sorts of weird, implausible theories about these corpses in the alleyway, but Smecker moves in and figures it all out in an enormously hilarious and ingenious way. By slapping on some headphones pumping out classical music and prancing around the scene checking things out, Smecker tells the cops what happened, when it happened, and who probably did it. Sure enough, the MacManus boys sheepishly arrive at the local cop shop, bloodied and bandaged from their tussle with the Russkies, and confess to the crime.

Fortunately for Connor and Murphy, Agent Smecker takes a real shine to these gregarious youngsters and releases them from jail. After all, the whole incident was merely a case of self-defense gone horribly bloody. But something strange happens to the MacManus brothers after this incident; they suddenly think they receive a calling from God to rid the streets of criminals. Checking in at the local armory of the Irish Republican Army (this is Boston, after all) and arming themselves to the teeth, Connor and Murphy use information gleaned from their encounter with the low-level mafia goons to stage a mission against the bosses of the Russian Mob. Other jobs soon follow, all apparently sanctioned and sanctified by the Almighty. The boys are so successful they soon draw in the assistance of David Rocco, who, with his vast knowledge of Boston’s underworld, provides a list of criminals who deserve to die. As the body count rises, Smecker comes closer to learning the identities of these homegrown vigilantes. The fact that the FBI agent undergoes a crisis of conscience over the crimes–he quickly realizes these murders are the work of citizens fed up with crime–leads him to secretly help the men responsible for the killings. Throw in a bunch of Mafia thugs, adult film star Ron Jeremy as a doomed hoodlum, a vicious, mystical killer named “Il Duce” (played by Billy Connolly, still atoning for “Head of the Class”), stylish gunplay, and an exploding cat and you have all the makings of this marvelous movie.

“The Boondock Saints” is a film about vigilantism and whether that activity is ever justifiable, although that theme seems to disappear for most of the movie. The conclusion, too, ends up being just a little too implausible, but getting there is a boatload of fun. The best things about Duffy’s film are the whipsaw quick dialogue, the hilarious running gags, and Willem Dafoe as Agent Paul Smecker. Dafoe especially deserves accolades for his portrayal of a conflicted FBI agent whose sympathies eventually turn to the MacManus brothers. His way of solving crimes, especially the shootout between Il Duce and the two vigilantes, is not only brilliantly executed but a wonder to watch. Moreover, Smecker’s interactions with the local Irish cops provide endless opportunities for great dialogue and hilarious jokes.

Regrettably, a bit of overacting at certain points of the film quickly annoys, as does the failure to provide anything more than lip service to vigilantism and how it pertains to our ultra violent world, but “The Boondock Saints” is so much fun despite these flaws that you will hardly notice them. The DVD includes many extras, such as important deleted scenes, a commentary by Troy Duffy, and a widescreen presentation. There’s even talk of an impending sequel, although the absence of the Willem Dafoe character, if the reports are true, could cause significant problems. There is not any other way to say it: if you have not seen “The Boondock Saints,” run, do not walk, to the local video store and buy or rent a copy today.

I first saw this film alongside Beyond by Fulci, and at the time I got the films confused only that Demons was even more horrifying since it takes place in a movie theater and I was in a movie theater when I saw it and subsequently Beyond for the second time. That being said the film is highly recommended for gore afficiandos and films of italian horror. The sequels to this film which I have not seen, received poor reviews. Much like the sequels to Fulci’s Zombi were not very good. Yes there’s gore in this film but there’s at least a bit of story. Great for a drunken weekend with buddies who have similar interests.

Set in Berlin, a new theater has opened which is showing a realistic violent horror movie about demons and the occult then suddenly some of the audiences transform into demons literally and ripping almost everyone to shreds, only some humans must defend themselves and find a way out.

A well made, original and entertaining horror action fantasy from director Lamberto Bava ( Director of ” Blade in the Dark” and “Shock̶ ;) and produced by legendary Italian horror maestro Dario Argento ( of “Suspiria” fame) loaded with great make-up effects, gore, action, a decent story and a nice twist in the end makes this a definite must see movie for fans of the genre. The DVD is quite good in picture and sound with fine extras especially the commentary by Lamberto Bava.

Also recommended: “From Dusk Till Dawn”, “Demons 2″, “Cemetery Man”, ” The Church”, ” The Last Action Hero”, ” New Nightmare”, “Day of the Dead”, ” 28 Days Later”, ” The Evil Dead”, “Dawn of the Dead ( both 1978 and 2004 versions)”, ” Night of the Living Dead”, ” Cannibal Ferox”, ” Phenomena”, “Texas Chainsaw Massacre part 2″, ” The Toxic Avenger”, “Re-Animator”, ” Videodrome”, ” Suspiria”, ” Inferno”, ” Evil Dead 2″, “Freddy Vs. Jason”, ” A Nighmare on Elm Street”,” Hellraiser”, ” Hell of the Living Dead”, “City of the Living Dead”, ” House By The Cemetery”, ” Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend”, “Rabid Grannies”, “Riki-Oh The Story of Ricky”, “Blood Diner”, and ” The Beyond”.
